CORRECT MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES

In this message we would like to give you some advice about how to take care of your new instrument. Handpans are entirely made by steel, but nevertheless they are delicate as any other musical instrument. First of all, don’t let them drop down and don’t hit them with anything but your hands or very light and short drumsticks (such as those used for steelpans). If possible, always use an hardcase bag instead of soft bags.

Don’t leave the instrument close to any heat source (fire, heaters) but most importantly don’t let them stay under direct sunlight, especially in summer. The metal will get very hot in few minutes, and will go out of tune. When cold, it could be in tune again or it could be slightly detuned. If you want to play on a beach, please stay in shadow and clean the pan very often.

Please keep it oiled or waxed. You can use anything. We suggest to not buy expensive oils or waxes. The very common WD40 oil or any liquid beeswax (usually sold for furnitures) will work fine as long as you apply it on the pan quite often. Solid beeswax or Lineseed Oil are not recommended. Put oil or wax, swipe with a cloth and then remove the excess with a clean cloth (paper is also ok). This will prevent rust and make the surface nice and more enjoyable to play.

Never use solvants (aclool, turpentine, ecc...) or soaps for cleaning the instrument.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE!! The pan should stay in its bag ONLY WHEN YOU TRAVEL, if you’re not traveling remove it from the bag and let it stay in air. ONCE MORE: DONT LEAVE THE PAN IN THE BAG!.

All Flare Handpans are treated again rust (nitrided) but, in the long run, moisture will win if you don’t take some precautions. The new generation of STAINLESS instruments does not have rust problems, of course, but we still suggest to use oil/wax for cleaning.

If you have read and understood this Maintenance Procedure and you want to register your instrument, please go to the CONTACT page, leave your Name and Email, write in the Message box your details (Country, address), date and the serial number of the instrument which you can find on the bottom shell, close to the rim after the # symbol. You will receive an email with the confirmation.
